EU Green Claims: What to Check Before Printing Hangtags
EU green claims rules apply from September 2026. Review hangtags, packaging and web shop copy, matching each environmental statement to supporting evidence.

Market: European Union (EU) | Checked: September 11, 2026 | Status: Upcoming Application (Applying September 27, 2026)
Distributors and event organizers selling branded merchandise to consumers in the European Union must re-examine sustainability buzzwords on hangtags, packaging, and event web stores. Directive (EU) 2024/825 applies from September 27, 2026, curbing generic environmental claims and unverified eco-labels on consumer-facing products.
What Directive (EU) 2024/825 Covers
Directive (EU) 2024/825 on empowering consumers for the green transition targets unfair commercial practices, applying across member states starting September 27, 2026, following the March 27, 2026 national transposition deadline. It restricts generic environmental statements—such as "green," "eco-friendly," or "climate positive"—when displayed to consumers without recognised excellent environmental performance relevant to the claim. Specific factual claims also require substantiation as a distinct requirement. The directive also regulates sustainability labels that are not based on certification schemes or established by public authorities. This directive is separate from the proposed Green Claims Directive, and the European Commission published explanatory guidance and FAQs in June 2026. For foundational policy details, examine the European Commission guidance on sustainable consumption and the text of Directive (EU) 2024/825.
Under Article 4 of Directive (EU) 2024/825, Member States must apply their transposing measures from September 27, 2026. Check the national implementation in each destination market before finalizing consumer-facing copy.
Practical Copy Reviews for Branded Merchandise
Private B2B spec sheets differ from consumer-facing commercial claims, which face strict substantiation rules. Buyers should adopt these review practices:
Replace broad phrases like "environmentally friendly notebook" with specific descriptions stating the exact component, material, and verified percentage only where records support it, without supplying unverified numbers or blanket claims.
Distinguish between a single recycled component and the entire product so branding does not mislead consumers about overall performance.
Ask suppliers for written material provenance or certification references before printing eco-logos on products or packaging.
Align corporate web shop descriptions with physical hangtags to prevent conflicting product claims.
The directive also prohibits claims that a product has a neutral, reduced or positive greenhouse-gas impact when those claims are based on emissions offsetting. This is a separate restriction from the rule on generic environmental claims.
Procurement Takeaways
Using recycled content does not make an item universally green, nor does holding a fabric certificate automatically clear all marketing claims. Move away from generic environmental slogans and ensure every printed sustainability claim defines its exact scope and supporting documentation.
